Omri's 40 Column
One of the most dominant players in the history of the NBA, Shaquille O'Neal, recently announced his retirement from basketball.
I want to take this chance to say thank you and express great appreciation to one of the most significant players and dominant players in NBA history. While first and foremost he is a great player, he is also an amazing person.
Him and I have spoken several times. While he is a BIG man who stands over seven feet tall, he acts like a little guy just dancing, singing and laughing all the time.
We spoke on the topic of Israel several times as well. He always says only good things about our country and about the state of basketball here. Although he does not speak Hebrew, he always tried and threw out a few words like "hello" and wishing me good luck and health. He told me he had a friend in college who has from Israel and that they are still very good friends. He said he wants to visit here. I really hope he will come and if so, I would love to show him our beautiful country.I got the chance to play against him when he was with Cleveland and Boston. Towards the end of his career his most valuable asset was his tough defense, but it was rare for him to guard guys like Kobe Bryant, LeBron or Nowitzki. I think the fatigue on his body over the years is what caused him to retire and eventually slowdown. But, when he was in shape, he was a consistent 30 points a game player and it was simply impossible to stop him.
Shaquille has all the options in the world open to him as he continues his career, whether it's basketball, TV, or really, anything else. We should remember him not only for his acting abilities, but also because of his smooth tongue, his great colorful interviews, dancing, and all the other facets of his colorful personality.
